The Cubadisco Festival, which takes place every year in the month of May, is the most important music event and contest in Cuba, and also a way to promote both, national talent and record industry.
Sponsored by the Permanent Committee of the International Cubadisco Fair and the Cuban Institute of Music, the festival dedicates each one of its editions to a specific country and musical genre. It also pays tribute to artists and personalities with a major contribution in this field.
Specialized conferences, expositions, talks and presentations of books and CDs are part of this week-long festival’s programme. In addition, dozens of performances by local and foreign singers and bands are held across Havana’s theaters and salons during the event. This way, all artistic expressions and music styles are represented, from the academic and traditional ones to others more alternative and commercial.
Even when Cubadisco doesn’t have the glamour of festivals in other countries, it has grown to become an inseparable part of the Cuban music scene. With 25 categories and awards in contest, it offers the opportunity to measure the quality of the most contemporary Cuban music, be it salsa, pop, rock, trova, rap, traditional, electronic or choral, among others.
