A tavern that is neither from the east nor from the west, but that is located right in the center of the city of Havana. The bohemian tavern Toca Madera (Knock on Wood) is the only restaurant in the capital specializing in Gastropub food.
The originality of the dishes surprises the visitor, all of which are made with “whatever is found in the nearest markets,” according to Chef Enrique’s words. Among the most popular ones there are the guacasandwiche (avosandwich), the sushi cubano (Cuban sushi) and the exquisite focaccia.
With the same authenticity, the place gives a touch of exoticism to its cocktails and offers drinks like Clammy María, a perfect incentive touched with a combination of caipirinha, hot pepper and rosemary.
This is the ideal place to combine art, good atmosphere and excellent chef food with reasonable prices for all publics, where the visitor will hardly come across the same menu twice.
It will be enough just to get inside to be captivated by the old bits and pieces (cameras, sewing-machines, telephones…), the faint lighting and the pungent smell of wood, without forgetting the country songs or the blues always playing in the background.
Check for yourself the myth of this bohemian tavern… a place that seems taken out from a Clint Eastwood’s movie…
