One of the most visited cultural centers in Camagüey is Galería Iris (Iris Gallery) which is led by the plastic arts artist Oscar Rodríguez Lasseria, one of the most prize-winning in “la tierra de los tinajones” (“the land of the large earthenware jars”, as Camagüey is also known).
Located on a busy corner in Camagüey, where there was before a stall for the sale of fruit juice, this gallery exhibits and commercializes artworks by Lasseria and youngsters Leonardo Pablo and Oscar Jr. (his sons), who are also devoted to plastic arts.
It is a personalized space that also finds room for projects by other creators, especially new young ones. It carries the name of Iris in honor of Lasseira’s wife, the mother of his two sons, who died of cancer.
The contribution to the fight against cancer through donations generated from the sale of artworks is one of the main motives of the Lasseira family, who made the pact of helping to improve the quality of life of those who suffer from this disease.
Lasseira is a graduate from the Interamerican Academy of Drawing and Painting (United States); from the Academy of Plastic Arts of Camagüey; and from the National School of Art Instructors from Cubanacán, Havana. It is also a graduate in Plastic Arts from the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Camagüey.
