Bellamar Caves: Remnants from the Past

Bellamar Caves, Matanzas

Daily 09:00 AM - 05:00 PM

The Caves of Bellamar, located in Matanzas just 5 km away from the center of the city, are the result of an unexpected discovery. First discovered in 1861, the caves are nowadays one of the most popular Cuban destinations for eco-tourism, also considered as National Monument.

Due to their beauty and archaeological value, Bellamar caves are visited every year by thousands of foreginers, eager to admire their natural treasures. According to specialized scientists, the caves could be 300 thousand years old.

The inside of the caves is fulfilled with natural sculptures in the form of huge, magnificent stalagmites and stalactites. The exhibition rooms contain evidence on the walls of that early art made by Cuba's first settlers.

The most famous inner galleries are the “Chapel of the 12 Apostols”, the “Love’s tunnel” and the “Devil’s Throat”. The entry to the caves is located in the gallery known as the “Gothic Room”.
